Burger Pimping Competition- Clifton, NJ

•November 15, 2008 • Leave a Comment

We decided to have a “pimp-off” down at Snake, Wendi, & Rob’s house this weekend.  We were each allowed to make 2 burgers.  The burgers were then each sliced into quarters and shared amongst the hungry savages (aka- US!).  After all the burgers were pimped, we all used a secret ballot to vote for our two favorites!

First burger was Rob’s.  Rob made his own hot sauce, which was a little sweet at first, then really spicy in the end.  Awesome! He put the sauce in the meat, and cooked up the burgers.  On the bun, he put avocado and tomato.  The fruit added a nice fresh finish along with the hot stuff.

Second burger was Johnny T’s.  Johnny used a special meat blend with Guinness, spices, and an egg.  He also used green and orange pepper (diced) and some vidalia onion (very important to the flavor). Then, he sandwiched a handful of cheese between two thin patties before grilling. The burgers were so thick, they needed to cook about 5 minutes on each side!  They were so good, they didn’t need anything else on top… YuM!

Third was a burger made by Curtis.  His secret ingredient was mushrooms sauteed in red wine, then placed on top.  Delightful!  He spiced his meet with… ?

Fourth was my burger… Fancy Lancy!  My burger was spiced by Ry, our usual meat seasoning (see his details below).  My secret weapon was the Velveeta Deluxe Mac & Cheese.  I spiced the mac & cheese with cumin, habanero powder, taco seasoning, & a bit of garlic powder.  Yummy!  (oh, and just to throw out props- Ry is the one who gave me the idea to use mac & cheese since it’s just about my FAVORITE food ever!!!  besides cheeseburgers of course!)

Fifth was Ry’s burger.  He spiced up his meat with garlic, onion, cayenne, black pepper, mustard, & salt.  He cooked his meat to a nice rare, then served it up with a long Italian pepper, a jalapeno pepper, & some habanero pepper- all sliced nice & thin and place delicately on top.  Spicy, yummy, goodness!

Finally, Snake was able to make his masterpiece.  His secret weapon was corned beef… one of my personal fave’s for breakfast food… how can you go wrong?  He also used some nice gooey horseradish pub cheese, home made hot sauce, and onions.  He grilled up the corned beef so it was nice a crunchy… delightful!

After a secret ballot…
3rd place went to Johnny’s Guinness Burger
2nd place went to Ry’s Pepper Burger
and first place…

…went to ME!  I actually won with the mac & cheese burger!  I’m glad it happened once, since now the competition is REALLY on with the boys…

Taco Burger & Spicy Burger

ry cutting up peppers

As a practice for the big burger cook off next weekend (more pimping to come!), Ry and I decided to make some yummy burgers.

Ry started his burger by spicing up his meat with peppers (mixed green & habanero), salt, & pepper.  My burger was spiced with tumeric, green peppers, garlic, & salt.

The burgers were cooked perfectly (nice and red on the inside), thanks to Ry.  When we were finished cooking, we each put cheese & tomatoes on the burgers.  Ry used lancys-condimentsketchup on his, and my condiment choices were ketchup, green tomatillo salsa, and red hot.

Ry’s burger turned out much better than mine.  It was the perfectly spiced… yum yum yum!  Mine needed some salt & pepper to spice it up a little more.  The tumeric didn’t really spice it up the way I wanted.  I guess I should’ve used the cumin… but I get them confused too often!!

The Pattriarch

After a visit to a local diner, the Pattriarch was conceived.  Basically, Deb ordered a grilled cheese with bacon & tomato, and Ry ordered a cheeseburger.  This is what sparked Ry’s epiphany…

The Pattriarch is a burger sandwiched between two grilled cheeses with bacon & tomatoes.   Ry created his special meat blend into burgers while I made the grilled cheeses (we used cheddar and pepper jack cheese; roma tomatoes, & smoked bacon).  When we finished, we used the sandwiches as our buns, placed our special patty in the middle, applied our condiments, and Voila!

Ry ate the whole thing with a side of tater tots… While I went with just a regular patty melt with tomatoes & bacon… Yum yum yum!

The Garbage Plate

Now, being natives of Western NY, we cannot forget to throw out props to a home-town favorite, Nick Tahou Hots. This place is so famous, they even have Wikipedia articles about them!!

Nick Tahou’s may be a hot dog place, but they are home to the most famous (and most delicious) garbage plate!  What, you ask, is a garbage plate?  Oh, my little innocent friend… The garbage plate is an unbelievable pile of all the goodness that is greasy spoon.  Here is the exact recipe from the Wikipedia article:

A Garbage Plate is a combination of one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken fingers, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, french fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad; On top of that are the options of mustard, onions, ketchup, Nick’s proprietary hot sauce, a greasy sauce with spices and ground beef. It’s served with rolls or Italian toast on the side, which is made fresh at the bakery next door.

As you can tell from the ingredients, this fine work of art can be eaten for any meal, at any time of the day. It does help that Tahou’s is open all hours of the day (especially good when you’re drunk & need a little pick-me-up around 3am!!) and caters to all types of people… locals, college folks, families, business people, and just regular folks passing through!  If you ever get the chance, check this place out!!

Bacon Burger Dog

•October 13, 2008 • 3 Comments

Initially made famous by The Cosby Show, then with the tradition continued at The Statesman in Geneseo, NY,

the Bacon Burger Dog (BBD) is an amazing burger that we make pretty often.  On the show, the BBD was actually a hot dog, wrapped in meat, then bacon- then grilled.  There are many ways to create this burger, but we enjoy our way the best! (Especially because we do it in burger form, not dog!)

Begin with one burger patty (Ry’s secret recipe) grilled and a nice soft roll.  (We had to use bread so we could fit the damn thing in our mouths!!)

Top with a slice of cheddar cheese, 3 slices of bacon (smoked hickory is my personal fave), and one hot dog cut in half (don’t half-ass it- use good dogs like Hoffman’s!).

Top with lettuce, tomato, & red onion… plus your favorite condiments!

Here’s a video of Ry eating the masterpiece…
